Bethesda has set January 27th as the premiere date of its first package of downloadable content for Fallout 3. Titled “Operation: Anchorage,” this expansion features a military ’simulation’ that puts players at the head of a customizable strike team charged with eliminating Chinese invaders in Alaska. The developers have apparently scaled the content based on player level, which should ensure a challenge to anyone regardless of when they choose to play the simulation. This content will be available for Xbox 360 players for 800 Microsoft points and will be presumably free for PC gamers. Unfortunately, it seems like the DLC just won’t be making its way to the PlayStation 3. I’m linking to the original interview between Eurogamer and Jeff Gardiner here, so I won’t elaborate further except to say that two more expansion packs are also on the way, due in February and March. The final of these, “Broken Steel,” is slated to raise the level cap from 20 to 30, but Jeff warns that it won’t be easy to reach the new limit.

The DLC is exclusive to the 360 because of a deal worked out between Microsoft and Bethesda.
